In a firm stance against property crimes, a magistrate court in Thyolo has sentenced two men, Misheck Sinagogo (26) and Mphatso Justin (21), to four years in prison after they were convicted of burglary and theft.
The incident occurred during the night of April 3, 2025, when the duo broke into the home of Lloyd Kalulu while he was asleep. They managed to steal three bags of maize, collectively valued at K150,000. Their criminal endeavor, however, was short-lived.
According to State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Stella Mwimaniwa, police investigations led officers to a local maize buyer who had unknowingly purchased the stolen goods. The buyer identified one of the thieves, which later led to the arrest of the second suspect.
When brought before the court, both Sinagogo and Justin admitted to the charges. During mitigation, they pleaded for leniency, citing family responsibilities. But the prosecution argued that their actions warranted no mercy due to the serious nature of the offense.
Second Grade Magistrate James Balakasi agreed with the prosecution’s stance, highlighting the gravity of their actions. He delivered a sentence of 12 months for burglary and 48 months for theft, to run concurrently—meaning both men will serve four years behind bars.
This case serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences of criminal behavior, and the court's commitment to protecting property and ensuring justice is served.
