According to Chief Agriculture Officer Misheck Chawala, the primary goal of this campaign is to create herd immunity and eliminate the rabies virus from its reservoir hosts, particularly dogs. "Vaccinating at least 70% of the dog population is one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to tackle rabies head-on," Chawala emphasized.
The District Health, Animal and Livestock Development Officer, Collins Chioko, shared his optimism about the initiative's impact. He expressed satisfaction with the community's participation, noting that in 2024, the district recorded an estimated 17,661 dogs—a number expected to increase this year. This highlights the growing need for sustained and widespread vaccination efforts.
The exercise is being carried out in collaboration with Mission Rabies, a dedicated organization working globally to eliminate this deadly disease. Their involvement brings additional expertise and resources, strengthening the campaign's reach and effectiveness.
As the vaccination drive continues, Zomba District is setting an inspiring example for other communities in the fight against rabies. With strong collaboration, public participation, and commitment to animal health, a rabies-free future is well within reach.
